Tragically, on Monday night, it was announced that one of the wounded officers, Joshua Eyer, had succumbed to his injuries.

“Officer Joshua Eyer was among the CMPD officers shot while on duty this afternoon,” Jennings declared on X. “He valiantly fought for several hours before succumbing to his injuries tonight, surrounded by his wife and family. Officer Eyer served with distinction for six years in the CMPD, and his bravery, service, and ultimate sacrifice will always be remembered. His memory will endure, and our gratitude is eternal.”

Jennings informed reporters during a brief press briefing Monday evening that Eyer is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son. “It was just last month that I stood in this very room, commending Officer Eyer for his exemplary service as officer of the month,” Jennings recalled. “He devoted his life to the service of our citizens, and he made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Jennings also mentioned that two individuals labeled as "people of interest" are currently undergoing questioning by the police. When law enforcement cleared the premises, a 17-year-old and a woman emerged, Jennings stated, but he couldn't confirm whether either of them were suspects.

"We're still at the early stages of the investigation," he emphasized. "CMPD will take the lead, as there's still much to unravel, numerous unanswered questions lingering."

Expressing his dismay, the chief stated, "I can't recall a more tragic incident in the Charlotte area."

"I can't recollect an instance where three law enforcement officers lost their lives in a single incident, along with one in critical condition and others injured from gunfire," Jennings remarked.

Authorities announced the clearance of the scene Monday afternoon, reassuring residents that they were no longer required to shelter in place, as reported on X.

"Numerous law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire in an active situation," the department had earlier communicated on X.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is currently in Charlotte and remains updated on the situation, as confirmed by his office to CNN. He was expected to engage with the families of the victims and officials later on Monday.

President Joe Biden conversed with the governor following the shooting, as stated by the White House on Monday. Subsequently, Biden issued a statement lauding the officers as "heroes."

"They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm's way to protect us," the president expressed. "We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded."

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles conveyed her deep sorrow in a statement regarding the shooting involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers and US Marshals.

"I ask that all Charlotteans keep them, the other injured officers, and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time," Lyles requested.

In a statement posted on X, the US Marshals Service expressed condolences, stating, "Our hearts are heavy tonight for the lives shattered by today's horrific shooting in Charlotte, NC. We mourn the loss of our Deputy and two Task Force Officers. We are grateful for all the support, and we keep the families and colleagues of all officers involved in our thoughts."
