FBI Atlanta investigated Colt Gray, the shooter at Apalachee High, last year due to threats.

The FBI’s Atlanta Division revealed Wednesday night that it had received threats last year involving Colt Gray, who was 13 at the time and is now the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by FBI Atlanta, the National Threat Operations Center received anonymous tips in May 2023 regarding online threats about a potential school shooting. The threats, which included images of guns, did not specify a location or time. After investigating, the FBI traced the posts to Jackson County, Georgia. They forwarded the information to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, which interviewed Gray and his father. The father acknowledged having hunting guns in the home but stated that Gray did not have unsupervised access to them.

At the time, the post said, there was no probable cause for an arrest or further law enforcement action. However, Jackson County authorities alerted local schools to monitor the situation.

Although Apalachee High School is in Barrow County, not Jackson County, it remains unclear whether Gray attended a Jackson County school before moving to the Barrow County School District.

During a 9 p.m. news conference, GBI Director Chris Hosey confirmed the FBI’s findings.

On Wednesday, Gray was identified by the GBI as the suspect who killed two teachers and two students and injured nine others in the shooting at Apalachee High School.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum later addressed the situation on Facebook, responding to rumors about other potential incidents:

"My phone is blowing up with messages about social media posts suggesting other incidents. To my knowledge, no such list exists," Mangum wrote. "This is an ongoing investigation at Apalachee. Please be mindful of those affected by this tragedy and continue to pray for everyone involved."
