Boston's goaltender, Jeremy Swayman, surveyed the crowd during the anthem, wearing a confident expression as if he already knew he would silence them for much of the game.
And silence them he did.
Continuing his stellar postseason performance, Swayman thwarted 38 shots, while Brandon Carlo scored a goal shortly after becoming a new father, leading the Bruins to a commanding 5-1 victory over the Panthers in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Monday night.
"I was impressed by our refusal to back down," Swayman remarked. "Our physical and mental strength was evident, and I'm eager for what lies ahead."
Contributions from Morgan Geekie, Mason Lohrei, Justin Brazeau, and Jake DeBrusk bolstered Boston's attack, with Pavel Zacha chipping in two assists. The Bruins rallied with three goals in the final 7:08 of the second period, erasing a 1-0 deficit and seizing control.
Swayman, who has guarded Boston's net in all five playoff victories thus far, maintained his excellence, particularly evident in shutting down all seven shots during Florida's three power plays, solidifying his status as the standout goalie of these playoffs.
With a league-leading 210 saves and an impressive goals-against average of 1.42 through seven playoff appearances, Swayman's performance has been unparalleled.
"We had our share of errors," acknowledged Bruins coach Jim Montgomery. "Without Jeremy Swayman, the game could have had a different outcome."
Matthew Tkachuk netted Florida's lone goal, as Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves for the Panthers, who returned to action after a week-long break.
Game 2 will take place in Sunrise on Wednesday night.
"Our performance didn't meet our standards," commented Panthers coach Paul Maurice. "But I believe we can address a significant portion of our shortcomings."
This matchup marked the first lopsided contest between the two teams this season, despite their close standings in the Atlantic Division, with Florida leading at 110 points and Boston following closely at 109. In the regular season, Boston narrowly won all five encounters, three by a single goal and one by two. However, in those games, Florida held the lead or was tied for 78% of the time.
Yet, this game unfolded differently. Once Boston gained the lead, they displayed exceptional defensive solidity, a trait they've consistently shown in rallying from 1-0 deficits in four out of the five meetings with Florida this season.
"We made some errors and perhaps didn't match their intensity tonight," noted Tkachuk. "They executed well."
After conceding the game's opening goal to Tkachuk midway through the second period, Swayman swiftly responded. Just 67 seconds later, Geekie capitalized on a loose puck in front of the net to level the score. Then, 3:25 after that, Lohrei netted his first playoff goal, beating Bobrovsky with a precise shot.
The highlight of the night belonged to Carlo, who experienced an unforgettable day. He missed the team flight to South Florida on Sunday to witness the birth of his son, Crew, on Monday morning. Despite arriving later than his teammates, Carlo made it to the arena in time to join the lineup and capped off his memorable day by scoring with 21 seconds remaining in the second period, giving his team a 3-1 lead.
"I was eager to play and thrilled that I did," Carlo expressed.
Brazeau extended the lead with 12:47 left in the game, maneuvering past the Florida defense to score with a backhand shot. With Bobrovsky pulled from the net with 5:30 remaining, DeBrusk secured the victory with an empty-net goal about two minutes later.
